I just did that on my work machine the other day and got their image
of Fedora Core 5 FC3 running perfectly in a VMWare window on WinXP
(and then proceeded to compile and run Wine for geek value).  It's
noticably slower than it would be natively, but if the machine is fast
enough, it is definitely bearable.  Very nice free product.
