Samba was one of the first (if not the first) open source
implementations of the server message block (SMB) protocol. Legend has
it, the developers were all chatting in an IRC channel trying to figure
out what to name it when one of them does:

grep '^s.*m.*b.*' /usr/dict/words

...and presents the list to the channel. Of the words returned, they
liked "Samba" the best.
