[GLLUG] OT: WTB Socket A Board

If you will use this board much, the power consumption difference of
the new Athon X2 processors and board will pay for themselves over a few
years. If you don't need that fast, you can always run Xen and
consolidate a couple machines too (if you plan on running Windows too,
make sure to get an AM2 chip for the VT support). Just make sure you
factor in power usage before you make a purchase. On newer hardware, I
have a 3800 X2, Geforce 7950, 2 SATA drives, and a DVD-RW burner running
with a maximal measured draw from the wall of 125 watts (with fully
loaded processors and IO - except for the video card).

You can get X2 3800s with either a 35 or 65 watt maximal draw. The idle
power consumption is a much bigger improvement as well. The
motherboards that go with these chips feature support chips that draw
relatively less power as well. The plain old Athlon 64 boards even with
the 754 socket aren't that far behind (the Socket A chips ran nearly as
hot as the Intels) and can often be found dirt cheap online (although
they are a dead-end path, the fact that you were looking for a socket-A
makes me think you don't care).
