[GLLUG] Xbox accused of jamming WLANs

I actually met the guy who is in charge of deploying the Meru network for
Morrisville at the last ACUTA conference in October. They have a very solid
understanding of wireless networks, but at the same time, they are doing a
lot of really new, bleeding edge stuff. They are rolling out 802.11n
campus-wide, doing a host of new authentication methods for their laptops
(they essentially give each of their students an IBM laptop), etc. They
never had to worry about Xboxes before because they were running their own
propriety WLAN solution (not 802.11a,b,g based). It doesn't surprise me
that the Xboxes are not playing well with the Meru 802.11n equipment -- it
has been proven that some wireless chipsets cause weird things to happen
with their wireless networks (I have personally seen this happen when there
are lots of Dell Broadcom chipsets in a given area).

This is the first I've seen of this -- why am I NOT surprised? This
is a good thing to know about if your WLAN starts acting up...

"Xbox accused of jamming WLANs"
** Signals from Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console can disrupt wireless
LANs, according to IT staff at Morrisville State College. **

This could be a problem for university IT staffs everywhere after Xmas
(if not already!) -- even if they fixed this for future versions, the
units already produced will STILL be a problem...
