There's always a way. If both systems are running Linux, you can pop the hard drive out and put it in the system you CAN log into, then run a brute force cracker on it.
Do you use a mixture of upper and lowercase in your passwords, as well as control characters and numeric digits? Do you choose long passwords?
If so, it may take a long time. You might be better off copying the data off the hard drive and starting over.

This is not the usual question that gets answered in here but I thought I would give it a try. I seem to forget my account passwords and I was wondering if there is a way to get the settings / password from an existing computer.
