Yes, laptop hard drives are of standard size/configuration as far as  
my experience goes (I guess there always examples of vendors doing  
weird proprietary exceptions).  I was in your situation a few years  
back, and for me the path of least resistance was to just swap out  
the drive and store it somewhere for safe keeping.  Google around and  
you can easily find a 20 or 40gb laptop drive for under $35.
