The Primary goal of the gaming machines is to show that people can buy games
and play them on linux. It's known that there are some good games that are
open source that run on linux. However, the general thought is that gaming
is linux's biggest weakness. So I wished to demonstrate. that this was more
of a perceived problem than a real one. As far as on older hardware....
Our specs are considered below "Entry-Level" in pc-gamer such a system
should be worth about $500 -$700
last months (march issue, april just came out) entry level system is
case and power suppyly
400-watt atx $140
processor
athlon 64 3800+ x2 AM2 $145
Motherboard
Asus M2N4-SLI $110
Memory
1GB DDR2-800 [512 x2] $120
Optical Drive
16x CD/Dvd-rom $20
Hard Drive
WD 250GB 7,200RPM $60
Sound Card
onboard $0
Video Card
Ati Radeon X1600 pro 512 $130
Total $725
I Think they must use bulk prices cause these look a little low, regardless
my specs were even lower probably resulting in a $500-ish machine. Now do my
specs look so new? My specs are that of a machine that was good 3 - 4 years
ago.
