Well - I got it - I made an entry in our firewall pc (smoothwall express 2.0) in the /etc/hosts file which resolves webmail.catheycompany.com to an internal IP (well a DMZ'd IP but still)

This seems to have fixed the problem.  Apparently the server didn't like trying to go out and then come back in.
