Agreed.  As a general rule, an end user has no business compiling
applications unless those applications are either not supported by the
chosen distro or different compilation options are required.  Even those
of us that run distros built from source avoid custom compiling things
ourselves when possible (we leave those builds up to the distro build
scripts).
