[GLLUG] Linux or Windows ?

Here is a review of a Linux distribution that reportedly runs well on
older hardware, Douglas. (And Eric, one of the new guys at last week's
meeting; Vector Linux 5.9 comes with multimedia codecs already
installed, so you can watch DVDs right away.) It is also not mentioned
much when people ask about something that runs on older hardware.

One of the comments also mentions PCLinuxOS TinyME, which I had never
heard of before, but which might also work well, and is probably
newbie-friendly if it's based upon PCLinuxOS. I see Damn Small Linux
and Fluxbuntu have already been mentioned, but not Puppy Linux, another
distribution designed to be run on older hardware, and mainly as a live
CD. You have many options to choose from that will run well on your PC.
  If you're confused, feel free to come to a meeting and ask questions;
you can find out when and where they are at http://www.gllug.org.

If you think your hard drive is too full with WinXP on it, don't think
you can install Linux on the hard drive and then have your choice of
booting WinXP or Linux, Douglas. If you're not willing to buy another
hard drive, you'll either have to replace WinXP with a fresh
installation of a Linux distribution or use a Linux live CD. A live CD
boots in your CD drive and runs without writing anything to your hard
drive, so it's a good way to try out Linux without making any changes to
a Windows installation.
