Bittorrent downloads don't get corrupted.  Part of the protocol uses
strong hashes to ensure that the download is intact.  The only way to
get a corrupt (completed) download with bittorrent is if the original
file was corrupt.  As for the regular download, did you verify the
checksum (md5sum or shasum file) that should have been provided?

In general, Linux does load very easily and once you get it to boot, you
will have a lot of software available and chances are network access
will be working correctly off the first boot.  More than likely, you are
running into some form of a hardware failure (CD-R that your drive
cannot read, bad memory or memory timings that Linux just happens to use
differently than windows, etc.).  You could just have a weird
configuration that needs some very minor configuration.  The best way to
troubleshoot this is to bring in the machine so we can help you out or
try with a different live-cd (such as DSL) or optical drive (in case
your reader is having trouble with the burned copy).
