[GLLUG] which distribution

Hi Keyan,

Like Brent said, AMD64 will work fine on Intel 64-bit processors.
AMD64, x86_64, and EM64T are basically all interchangeable terms for
the same thing. AMD64 was just the first name that was given to the
architecture because AMD were the ones that invented it, even though
the proper vendor-neutral term should probably be x86_64 at this
point. There are slight differences in the AMD vs Intel
implementations, but they're all ironed out at the compiler level. I
highly recommend giving this article a read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_64

I've been running 64-bit Ubuntu on my dual-core ThinkPad for the past
couple of months and have been perfectly happy with it. There used to
be occasional issues running 64-bit Linux (mostly to do with
proprietary software that the vendor refused to port to 64-bit), but
now the experience is pretty much seamless.
