As you've discovered, Bill, Ubuntu (and probably other distros, like 
Gentoo) work best with fast Internet connections.  One thing you could 
try is to find a cheap (Craig's List?) network card for your laptop, 
configure it, and take it to places that offer free WiFi.  Maybe at 
work, even.
