That's because the adapters are hard to make and sell affordably. VGA
and S-Video signals are so different that it's not an easy task to
convert the former to the latter without quite a bit of hardware. An
article I read a few years back said that you basically have to
compromise either on picture quality (containing artifacts from an
imperfect signal translation) or latency (meaning any audio coming out
of the system would be slightly ahead of the video). This is what led
me to just get a cheap nvidia card for my media PC.

It's possible that the converters they sell now are better, though.
