The DVD-burner drive with the best combination of price and
performance seems to be Lite-On. ASUS doesn't make their own drives
-- I'm pretty sure they're made by Lite-On, as are several SONY
models.

I've had problems getting some Samsung, Toshiba/Samsung, and LG drives
to write at full speed, but not the Lite-Ons; it's probably a firmware
issue. At under $50 each, they are essentially free, since they pay
for themselves after only a few burned DVDs.

Verbatim-branded blanks are the best DVDs for archival use. They use
a metal-based AZO dye that has a longer data life than the common
Ritek or CMC Magnetics blanks that most other branded discs use.
Examples: TDK & Maxell = Ritek, Philips = CMC.
