Once again, it is time for me to ask for volunteers to staff the
Penguicon computer lounge for this year's convention, which will be held
on April 18th, 19th, and 20th. For more deatils on Penguicon, including
the schedule of events, please consult http://www.penguicon.org.
The computer lounge is open during almost the entire run of Penguicon,
so we'll need voluteers manning the lounge from Friday afternoon until
Sunday around noon. We'll also need extra people on-hand to set the
lounge up and test all the terminals Friday morning and to put things
away early Sunday afternoon. (Exact times for these operations will be
announced closer to the convention.) Finally, we'll need many extra
volunteers in the lounge when we hold the Linux install-fest; last year,
the first time we had an install-fest, we were swamped. We have need of
technically-skilled people as well as those not technically-inclined,
because we need to keep an eye on the property in the room at all times
and answer the many questions people have about FOSS and the computer
lounge itself, so please do not fail to volunteer because you think you
have no useful skills to offer. Other than set-up, tear-down, and the
install-fest, we will always have one security/answer-desk person on
duty and we'll have a technical, network-support person in the lounge
from the morning through the evening, but not all night.
Please let me know if you can give us some time to help out in the
lounge by sending me an e-mail to this address. Feel free to specify
times you can and/or cannot staff the lounge, although I understand that
with the thus-far incomplete and variable schedule of events it will be
difficult to determine what presentations you want to attend until
Penguicon is almost upon us. I already have one volunteer; thank you,
Ariel.
While I do hope every GLLUG member who attends Penguicon spends some
time helping out in the computer lounge, I hope you'll all find time to
attend the convention even if you don't volunteer. If you can't spend
the whole weekend there, you can buy one-day passes and come for the
day. I've been at the last two, and it's hard to describe how much fun
it is just to hang out for an extended period with fellow members, and
there are plenty of opportunities to meet new friends. There are lots
of things to do, free food in the convention (con) suite, and GLLUG will
be hosting a room party both Friday and Saturday nights. Plus, since
it's also a science-fiction and fantasy convention, there are lots of
people wearing entertaining costumes and just generally having a good time.
