Help!

I'm to work on my son's laptop out in CA, trying to fix a corrupt 
registry in XP from a shell into the Ubuntu partition that I (wisely) 
put on his machine.  Problem is the way that "ls" outputs the 
directories on the windows partition.  It blocks them in green, which 
would be OK, except that the text color is so close that then I can't 
read it.  How do I tell the terminal window, or ls, to either stop using 
highlighting or to change the colors its using.  Another thing that is 
no doubt very simple, but I can't find anything in the man pages.....
