I tried out sox on some of the Science Friday podcasts and listened to
a couple of the files today.  It seems to have worked just the way I
wanted, so didn't have to adjust the volume at all.  I was even able
to copy appropriate settings straight from the man page in the section
about the compand option.  Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
