[GLLUG] Datacomm issue -- advice sought

Hi, everyone, 
I have an interesting problem. 
Some of you know I've recently reconfigured my computer to dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu. 
WinXP says there's no datacomm connection to the outside world. Ubuntu happily plays in the cloud. 
So there really is working datacomm on the system. 
Why can't WinXP see it? 
Yes, I know that may be too simple a question with a complex set of possible answers. 
I'm looking for guidance so I can attempt to fix the Windoze side of the equation. 
As usual, any help will be appreciated.
