If I understand what you are saying then possibly something is 
preventing it from automatically resyncing in the mirror set.  I also 
thing the AAAA and AAA indicate you have 4 and 3 drives active in the 
mirror set.

Maybe try to get it to resync (read the man page first so you know what 
this is doing)

     mdadm --assemble --update=resync /dev/md? /dev/hd?? /dev/hd?? 
/dev/hd?? /dev/hd??
