Yes, and they put themselves into umass mode automatically.  For a lot 
of services though, they provide automatic synchronization with 
cloud-provided services such as contacts in gmail and facebook.  Google 
calendar synchronization is nice too, so that when I add a meeting on my 
laptop my phone has the update within a couple of minutes as well.
