As a "plan B", is one of those ubiquitous USB->PS/2 adapters out of the 
question?  I seem to accumulate them -- 1 with each new trackball I buy -- but 
I stopped using them when Linux (or maybe it was X11?) seemed to start 
supporting pointing devices on USB more reliably.
