[GLLUG] Laser printers, or buying your next enemy...

Avoid the HP printers. They've created an open-source driver that works
for Linux, for various definitions of works. The code, in fact, is
really great. The problem is that the authors have never deployed
software before, so you'll have a permissions nightmare to work out on
your own. It will take lots of upping logging levels, solid debugging,
and understanding unix filesystems and services pretty well.

The best results I've had with Linux is to buy a postscript compatible
printer with network capabilities. By virtue of using postscript it
leverages a long-established printing system that doesn't rely on
device-specific drivers. You just get a PPD file that describes the
printer's capabilities, and you computer does the right thing. Konica
Minolta sells a color laser postscript printer for $300 or $400. Should
be possible to get a lower priced machine if it's just printing monochrome.
