After examining the dmesg log, it appears that the USB ports only worked
for the USB 1.x device (using uhci_hcd) but none of the USB 2.0 devices
I tried (which use ehci_hcd). I also found a note on the ThinkWiki
website about USB 2.0 devices not working. (I neglected to mention that
the laptop is a ThinkPad.) They had several suggested solutions.
Rather than replace the motherboard, I elected to blacklist the ehci_hcd
driver and see how that works.
