[GLLUG] Home Router Vulnerabilities

I've been reading that most home routers are woefully insecure. By
replacing the firmware in these routers, do projects like DD-WRT and
Tomato remove these vulnerabilities and make the routers secure?
Granted, they might have vulnerabilities of their own, but they haven't
been in the news for that, and I would expect open-source router
firmware to be more secure than proprietary router firmware, whose
manufacturers look at security as a cost item to be minimized.
