May be worth checking SELINUX (if it is enabled). That can prevent apache/php (whatever) from connecting to a DB by default.

This is especially likely if you can connect to the DB yourself (with the credentials for wordpress) but wordpress cannot.

The command 'sestatus' will tell you if SELinux is enabled/installed or not.
