It has grown worse over time, but I can't tell you how fast, or even 
what I started with.  I occasionally add programs.

I backed my partition up and booted an old copy of SystemRescueCD.  It 
has GParted, as well as other tools.  It's amazing how easy and fast it 
is to resize a partition, at least it is when you have the unallocated 
space next to it to do so.  It took all of nineteen seconds to extend 
the partition a couple of gigabytes, or so GParted reported.

Thank you all for your replies.  While I didn't use any of your advice 
this time, it's nice to know that resize2fs is always there and works in 
emergencies.
