This Week at CIRTL: Women in STEM, the Calculus Barrier, & Effective Grading

This week we're continuing our CIRTLCast series on academic careers with a session on women in STEM, led by University of Texas at Arlington's Lisa Berry. We're also co-hosting a CIRTL Reads journal club meeting with University of Colorado Boulder, where we'll discuss research on how instructors can make introductory calculus, a requirement for many STEM majors, more accessible to a broad range of students. We'll close out the week with a Teaching in the US event, co-hosted with University of Maryland, focusing on tips for effective grading.
To join this week's events, just go to our events calendar page <http://www.cirtl.net/events> and click the "JOIN THIS SESSION" link under the event date and time.

November 11, 2015: 1PM ET/12PM CT/11AM MT/10AM PT
The second of three events in University of Texas at Arlington's CIRTLCast series on building a rewarding academic career

It seems like there's always a headline about how women are underrepresented in STEM fields - so what can be done to change that? By looking at research-based theories for why women are underrepresented, this session will help participants develop teaching strategies that address the cultural and institutional barriers that hold women back.

Speakers:
Dr. Ashanti Johnson, Assistant Vice Provosts for Faculty Recruitment and Associate Professor, Earth and Environment Sciences, University of Texas at Arlington

Part of our monthly CIRTL Reads Journal Club, organized by University of Colorado Boulder

Introductory calculus is a required course for many STEM undergrads, and it's also where a lot of students get discouraged and leave STEM altogether. Join us to discuss new research on how different approaches to calculus instruction can change student outcomes, especially for marginalized and underrepresented undergrads.
Discussant:
Ethan Peck, Lecturer In Discipline, Frontiers of Science, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Columbia University
Article:
"The Impact of Instructor Pedagogy on College Calculus Students’ Attitude Toward Mathematics" in International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology.
