MSU Friends of Sociolinguistics / MSU Socio Lab,
If you or a graduate student you know is using internet data for sociolinguistic research, this course might be of interest to them. I know many of us would welcome an opportunity to think about identity and ethics issues surrounding this kind of work.

Subject: special topics grad seminar: WRA 891 Digital, Online, and Internet Research
Colleagues:
Seats are available in a special topics course offered this fall through Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures, taught by Professor Liza Potts.
WRA 891 Digital, Online, and Internet Research is 3 credits and meets on Mondays from 6:00-8:50pm in 218 Bessey Hall. The course *will* meet on Wednesday, August 28, following the university schedule for the first week of classes (although schedule.msu.edu contradicts this, and we're working to fix that!).
The course focuses on theory, methods, approaches, techniques, tools, ethics in/on/about digital, online, and internet research. We will examine these spaces as they relate to issues of social, economic, and political issues within our societies. Topics include a short history of the internet, digital identity and community, activism, labor, harassment, privacy and surveillance, networks, and how the internet is governed (or not). We will review and engage in several ways in which research gets done and how we can ethically sustain this work given current events.
If you have any questions about the course or enrolling it in, please feel free to contact Professor Potts at lpotts at msu.edu; please do feel free to share this information broadly.
Thanks --
Danielle

Catalina, Liza:
Your special topics courses for fall (Liza) and spring (Catalina) are underenrolled.
Liza, you have four students, and the course will run, but I'd still like to see a few more people enrolled.
Catalina, you have no enrollment, which isn't a surprise given that we haven't publicized or promoted the course.
Liza, can you please send me a blurb for your WRA 891 for fall that I can circulate to appropriate email lists on campus (e.g., DH)?
Catalina, can you please send me a blurb for your WRA 891 for spring that I can circulate to appropriate email lists on campus (e.g., our grad lists; the Chicanx studies list)?
Thanks!
Danielle
