Subject: [sociolab] White Apprentices, Allies & Accomplices Discussion(s) Friday 2-3, 3-4
Hi all,
Here's an opportunity, following up on the "White Apprentices, Allies, and Accomplices" workshop run at the 2nd Annual Advancing African American Linguist(ic)s Symposium that might be of interest to you - though it's on relatively short notice (apologies for that)! These discussions are taking place this Friday afternoon (2-3pm EDT, 3-4pm EDT).
----------------------
Dear AAAL2 participants (and beyond! Please distribute this call widely amongst linguists),
Last week, as a part of the Second Annual Advancing African American Linguist(ic)s Symposium (AAAL2) Mary Bucholtz and Jenny Sperling co-hosted a discussion entitled “White Apprentices, Allies, and Accomplices.” This interactive zoom session provided a key opportunity for white linguists to reflect upon the ways we promote, support, and engage with Black scholars in our field, and to propose crucial next steps for improving on our equitable practices in linguistics. Participants expressed the need for a more regular set of white allyship workshops. Using Mary Bucholtz’s guide, “How white linguists can support Black linguists: A crowd-sourced document” from AAAL2, we will continue developing our understanding of and commitment to allyship.
For the first in what we hope becomes a series of conversations, Katie Carmichael (Virginia Tech) and Betsy Sneller (Michigan State University) will host two zoom workshops, targeting participants at varying stages on the path of allyship:
1. White Apprentices & Allies: Friday, August 21, 2020, 2-3 PM EDT.
A conversation with white linguists who are newer to learning about advocacy for Black linguists.
Goals: learn about structural racism within linguistics, start to identify ways that we personally can move towards racial justice, & build community with other apprentices & allies
1. White Allies & Accomplices: Friday, August 21, 2020, 3-4 PM EDT.
A conversation with white linguists who have been active in the work towards antiracism.
Goals: Build community with other allies & accomplices and commit to concrete antiracist goals.
You are welcome to join one or both of these conversations - we would love some people who have been active in antiracist work already to attend the “White Apprentices and Allies” workshop in order to help mentor those who are earlier on this path, and we welcome those who are newer to antiracist advocacy to join the “White Allies & Accomplices” workshop after you attend the “White Apprentices and Allies” workshop, to listen and learn more.
To participate, please fill out this google form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdrwxd3wPA7mL9h7yj2WD2O5x-Zgw7D5AI6f8PV1NPN1va3tQ/viewform?usp=sf_link__;!!HXCxUKc!lmaomyr928NqIXU2uf5lPXad5tNLGWAB-Qoy8Wufog7AO1Zi4e_pbqU694wBUks$> by Thursday, August 20. All registrants will receive the zoom details and password to participate on the morning of Friday, August 21.
We hope you can make it, but our goal is that these conversations will continue beyond these sessions (so please contact us if you want to host the next series!).
All the best,
Katie Carmichael
