Request recommendation for C++ books

I'm a C programmer myself, and the only reference book I use on a
regular basis is a copy of the C standard itself. If I were ever
to write much C++ code, then I'd buy a copy of the C++ standard,
too. You can get a .pdf file of it for something like $20 from
NCITS <URL:http://www.ncits.org>.
Be warned that the C++ standard (what I've seen of it, anyway) is
much less readable than the C standard. Quite ghastly in places,
in fact.
