dial on demand

Ah... Yes, the joys of diald. To the best of my knowledge, diald is the
only way to do this. I was about to say that it isn't too difficult, but
then I remembered it took me almost 2 hours to set it up correctly. There
are 2 tricks, if I remember correctly. First off, I'm assuming your using
linuxconf to configure the system. There are actually 2 modules that can
configure ppp for you. Deep in a menu somewhere it allows you to enable
"extra configuration modules" or something to that effect. You need to
enable this other module and use it. It specifically has an option to
configure diald for you. This, theoretically, makes life easier. The
second part of this is in that module, you have to explicitly pass the
noauth option to pppd. If you don't it won't connect at the ppp layer.
(long story, very painful, essentially has to do with the fact pppd can also
be used in a "server" role and thinks it's a "server" by default.)

I wish I could be more helpful, but the machine that I configured this on is
in a locked basement 30 miles from where I live and has been happily humming
along since I set it up. If I get up that way soon, I'll check the exact
settings and send them at you, or anybody else who is interested.
