dns and mail name

When setting up a DNS entry you enter in the reverse lookup a mail address. You
replace the @ sign with a dot.

Now how can this not cause problems with mail addresses like

first.last.domain.com  first.last@domain.com

How do you circumvent the wrong dot being converted? Maybe I should ask why the
@ sign has to be turned into a dot in the first place.
