Windows requires it too, its literally my job, I know it does.
The Advantage to UNIX is you do not have to be seen doing it :)

No. However all it takes is a handful of people to put their heads
together and realize how to set it up as safely or more so than
windows. Done right it would work fine. Finding flaws may be inevitable
since people are only human, but that does not mean we have to let people
exploit it. It is pretty simple to setup a (free mind you) firewall on
each comp to allow only outgoing connections and those packets back in
which were initiated by that computer.

I think it would be naive to assume that if Linux went in the labs it
would be RedHat 5.2 (or 6.2) running services that would surely doom it.

I dont think that would be enough, I think people would also have to show
why CL's job would get easier because unix is in the labs. I can imagine
they have enough employees at the moment to do what they are presently
doing with windows and wouldnt want to hire more to wrassle unix issues in
labs, and wouldnt have the time to coordinate volunteer help either :/
If anyone really cares I suggest they get a job at CL and work from the
inside :) Finish duties and work up the sample ideas and clout to
actually convince someone to let you make it happen..
