If I'm understanding you correctly, the graphical login is 
just a Xfree program (probably gdm since you are running 
GNOME).  If you upgrade Xfree, you probably can still use 
gdm unless there is a dependancy problem.  The graphical 
login is optional anyways.  I prefer to not start Xfree 
when I boot -- I'd rather just type startx.  You have 
more control that way.
