New kernel compiled, minor complaint

I have 2.2.17 on my Debian box, compiled as bzImage, and it is mostly
fine (except for gobs of unresolved symbols in some modules, but I'll
look at that later). My complaint is perhaps with Lilo: In my
lilo.conf file, I have "vga=ask", "prompt", and "delay" set, but
during the boot, it never asks me to set the VGA mode. Perhaps
I mistakenly set something in the kernel compile config itself, but
I thought that if you set "vga=ask" in lilo, it will always ask.
How can I get it to honor the "vga=ask"?
