Since the DHCP topic has been well explained by the GLLUG.
I'll just pose some security issues to you.
Cable modems are a fast connection to the Internet.
It is also a fast connection to you from the outside.
Since you stated that you know nothing about networking
then might I suggest you test your connection after you get everything
installed.
For a simple scan of your Windows Machines go to http://www.grc.com run
"shields up"
or for a more comprehensive intense scan go to http://www.hackerwhacker.com
If you find yourself with a Linux machine open to the public
a nice piece of software that will help you lock your Linux machine down is
at http://www.bastille-linux.org
Bastille-1.1.0.tgz will setup your local security and also setup an ipchain
rules to allow traffic coming from the internal network ( Windows
95/98/NT/2000/ME ) out and also DENY/REJECT outside traffic from coming in.

|----------|      |-----|      |--------|
|Windows 98| <--> |Linux| <--> |Internet|
