Kernel Question

I apologize for being lazy and not doing the
research, and if noone knows, that's fine too.

Linux kernel release 2.2.17 came out two weeks
ago and contains some bugfixes for 2.2.16.
However, what it doesn't contain are the kernel
drivers for RealTek 8139 cards, which I was
planning on using in some new hardware we're
rolling out here at Holt. On any of the kernel
hacker listservs, has their been any discussion
of why this driver was omitted from the latest
2.2.x release? It's been a part of the kernel
since 2.0.1x and extremely helpful (since you
	can get rtl8139 10/100 cards for @ $30). What's
stranger is that the driver *DOES* appear as
part of the latest 2.4.0-test## kernel. What
gives? I want to run the latest stable (2.2.x)
kernel on these machines, but I don't want to
shell out the additional money for 3com or
Intel cards just to be able to use it. I feel
as though it undermines the whole point of
	free software. :)
