To be undertaken only by the insane, IMO.

You can retrieve them over the network, too.

Assuming you mean "get [over the network]": *WHAT*?  Of course
you can.  I've probably done it a hundred times or more.

Maybe you weren't using one of the kernel images that had support
for your network card.
