kernel compile problem

[It is Saturday night, are you at home playing on your
Linux box???]

Anyways, I downloaded 2.2.17 for my Debian Potato box. I
did my config, and near the end of the "make zImage"
process, I start seeing lines like:

/tmp/cc2oPDqlI.s:112: Warning: using `%eax' instead of
`%ax' due to `I' suffix

The whole thing stops on:

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [zImage] Error2

Restarting the process but using "make bzImage" does some
stuff on the screen, but just stops and there is no
output kernel files. Anyone know what the above
warning messages mean? I'm guessing it is some assembler
thing, but beyond that I'm stumped.
