scsi as hda

The machine could have both SCSI and IDE controllers, but only have IDE
drives.  Also, the kernel may have SCSI support compiled in...hence needing
no module.  On RedHat (not sure about other builds) /proc/scsi/scsi should
reveal what SCSI devices are attached to the system and what controllers are
*really* recognized by the system.
