My gut feeling would be "No" on the A+.  I took a practice A+ exam (came with
a book on PC hardware) and got a passing grade without studying and without
knowing anything about Windoze 3.1 (15% of the test was on that.  Erk.)  It's
basically another set of numbers and letters to put after your name to get
recruiters to be impressed.

Dealing with semi-flaky PC hardware under a non-Doze OS and supporting
brane-damaged Doze users for ~6 months would probably put you in a very good
position to get an A+ cert if you should decide to bother.

RE: the homemade cable-- um, best advice I can give is "Don't attempt to make
a crossover cable after drinking Tequila, and don't use cable of questionable
quality for your own experiments in home crimping."
