I understand what you are trying to do and the long tags are a bit cumbersome
but I wonder if it makes sense to accomplish this.

If

<listitem><para>text</para></listitem> equals <li>text</li>

then what does

<listitem><para>text</para><para>more text</para></listitem> equal to?

Or are you only concerned by converting EdBook to DocBook but not Docbook to
EdBook?

But anyway. I find XML and DTDs fascinating ever since I been reading on them
and played with Docbook. Once moved to my new place I hope I find time to
really create some nice documents.
