It's my understanding that WINE won't run without a display to attach to. 
While you can launch it from the command line, if your default display 
isn't allowing connections (eg. waiting at a kdm/gdm login prompt), then 
WINE will probably fail.  I just ran a quick trial on my Mandrake box and 
it exited with an errorlevel.  :-\
