dhcpd

I'm not sure if this is applicable to your situation, but how I handle it is via a combination of my DNS server and dhcpd server. For the "static" hosts I simply but static dhcp entries in the dhcpd config file that way these hosts are guaranteed to get the same IP every time. Then I have those IP's entered into my DNS records, both for forward and backward resolution of names. I set the dhcp server to point to my DNS server for host resolution and presto the computers know who they are in speaking of DNS name. As far as the NetBIOS name for your windows machines, that would be a lot more tricky and I'm not even sure it can be done. Hope this gives you some ideas.

- For my linux machines I just have a cron that rus, and also a script that runs on boot that does the following: rdate -s ntp.msu.edu (or whatever time server you want to go to)

Hello,

I set up a dhcp server and it works. Is there any way to assign to
clients(win98 and Linux) the hostname by use of the dhcp server?

One can use samba to sync the clock of clients with the server. Is there a way
to sync a Linux client's clock with server clock?

Thanks,
