Do any command line audio tools work with it?  
Do all the proper devices exist in /dev? (I'm not sure how Linux handles
devices these days, but it's something to check and you may need to make
the correct devices if they aren't there)

If you can get sound from the console but not xmms, try the xmms
preferences (look for something like "output plugin" ) and make sure
that's set OK.  For example, esd takes over my sound card in X, so xmms
uses "eSound Output Plugin" instead of "OSS Driver" (I'm using
FreeBSD...).
