Not a direct answer to your question, but also look in /usr/portage/distfiles and see how much stuff is in there. Everything Gentoo downloads goes into that directory, but it is not necessary to keep it around on a small install. You can wipe that directory out with impunity, and it may gain you as much as a gig, depending on what you've installed already.
