I've installed two of the Intel 1000tx's now, one of them on 2.4.7-10,
and one in 2.4.something_older. The 2.4.7-10 loaded from the e1000 in
the kernel. The something_older required loading the Intel driver, but
went without a hitch. Both work great at 1000Tx Full Duplex.
