With Roger's help this past Wednesday, I was able to get the networking
working on my laptop (Com port conflict on xircom card as Paul? had
suggested multiple times on this list). As I mentioned to some then, my
laptop was acting flakey and appeared to be failing (she's an old girl). I
gave up on the idea of the laptop working, and decided to disassemble it in
the hopes that I could figure out what was wrong (fat chance). After about
45 minutes of disassembly, I removed the last piece, the motherboard, and
flipping it over I saw one of those "correction" wires soldered from a
point on the MB to a pin off a chip. The chip-end was broken loose. After
soldering it back on, the laptop works perfectly. Over the weekend I was
able to dist-upgrade to testing and install enough productivity apps that
for the first time I have a fully-functioning Windows-replacement Linux-box.

Thank You all for all of your help.
