I'm a big proponent of self-study and it's been pretty successful for me in
the LAMP arena since 1996.

I'll admit though the biggest single leg-up I got was taking a Unix college
class. We did our assignments through the instructor's Linux server, learned
tons about the roots of Perl (awk, sed, shell scripts), and generally had a
lot of fun. (Well the techie people had fun.) In my case it was in
metro-Detroit ( www.hfcc.net ) but if Open Source people are watchful, you
can probably pick-n-choose classes that fit your goals.
